Final Project - Media Jam

You have 3 minutes to perform a live mix or set. You can use the following:

1) NuVJ Video Mixer OR your own application (i.e., a Flash multi-level loader application - MLL)

2) Pre-recorded soundtrack OR live voice-over plus soundtrack

In the live visual world, here are your options for each choice:

If you're using NuVJ:

•  Live Video (through USB)

•  18 clips (can be video or Flash)

another mix possibility is this, although I haven't tested it yet:

• pre-recorded/pre-produced video & audio printed to mini-DV tape instead of live video

If you're using a Flash MLL:

•  Live Video (through Flash Live Camera; Firewire)

•  Under 30 Flash clips (not too processor-intensive)

• pre-recorded/pre-produced video & audio printed to mini-DV tape instead of live video

Think a little about ORGANIZATION and INTENT. This is most likely to be apparent in where you choose to be on the continuum between:

ABSTRACTION <————and————> NARRATIVE

Material you should start collecting or producing that almost always works:

  • Flash movies of large, floaty text - - easy to load and play.
  • Flash movies of simple signature animations
  • Video clips (silent) cut from a single source.

Remember, not everything needs to make sense, not everything needs to link or sync to anything else.

MAP OUT your three minutes, as accurately as you can. Here's a bunch of materials and examples: TimeChartTest.pdf  and library and banks. Old one: timeChart.pdf

and some resource files in Illustrator and InDesign:  nuVJ_notations.zip

Other ideas on how to turn VJing into a literary art form? (Or is that a Fail?)

PLAN AHEAD - what media do you need? What mixing 'recipes' are you going to use?

If you want to work with the NuVJ mixer, download the latest version (1.5) and install. You'll get the serial number for our unit in class.

Other video jamming tools available (Demo mode often has some watermark): Resolume Avenue 3, Union Livid, ArKaos Grand VJ, Onyx (Flash-based), Flxr (Flash-based), VDMX5

Final Project - The Package

Make your Media Jam a consolidated, complete Package (i.e., a .zip file or archive) that can be shared, downloaded, remixed by the rest of the VJ world. In addition to the material you assembled above, add :

1) YOUR SOUNDTRACK - in either .aif or .wav format.

2) Also, map this out ahead of your in-class performance. Which clips, when, with what effect? SAVE your map as a .pdf file.

And 3) write out a short .rtf file (or .txt file, or .doc file) where you discuss what you're interested in investigating with your Media Jam.

Take all this, PLUS your media files, and COMPRESS them into a .zip file (might also be called , 'Create Archive of x# (of) items'.

OK, more material about NuVJ here

And here are screenshots of all the banks, plus the names of most of the clips.

The NuVJ interface - ah, the memories . . . .

and as you start filling out your time charts, here are the effects we used. Do you remember them all?
